Be aware of two vulnerabilities affecting WebP (efficient compression for images) and WebM (video) files.
The first (CVE-2023-5129 and CVE-2023-4863) - WebP was found on September 13, 2023 and many software packages are vulnerable, including Edge, Chrome, Firefox, all releases of Android, iPhone and all chat apps on the windows desktop like Teams and Discord.
This security vulnerability is marked a 10.0 out of 10 for severity. By browsing to the wrong image on a webpage, or view a message in chat, your device could become completely compromised.
The second (CVE-2023-5217) - WebM was identified on September 29, 2023. Like the WebP hack, many software packages are vulnerable. It affects sites and platforms that serve videos, including streaming.
To protect yourself and your websites, make sure you update your software regularly and apply patches. Don't wait, do it now. This includes websites, phones, computers and tablets.
